New Mexico State Poet LaureateHistory: Senate Bill 536 of the New Mexico State Legislature was signed into law by the Governor on April 5th, 2019. The bill created the position of New Mexico State Poet Laureate and allocated money to the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs to support expenses of the position. The State Poet Laureates travel throughout the State, promoting poetry, literacy and reading. They do this through public appearances, making speeches and attending conferences. Most State Poet Laureates serve two year terms, that can be renewed. It takes a lot of energy and commitment to be a State Poet Laureate.
